Quick Dog Training Tips

Updated: Feb 11

QUICK TIP #1 If your dog destroys their toys it’s because they haven't been taught to chew on a bone instead. When your dog chews your sofa or sits down to chew their brand new toy, say Noooo.... and replace it with a chew and calmly praise when they swap their interest. All training is possible with consistency, repetition and praise! Have fun with your dogs #dogchewing #dogtraining #quickfix #howtostop QUICK TIP #2 Get angry before you get angry, training your dog can be tough and by drawing the line earlier means your less likely to actually get angry and frustrated. if you are getting angry and frustrated you have probably been trying for too long. If your dog just isn’t getting it.... look at what you can change to help them understand. If your angry and frustrated walk away and come back to it another time, keep all interactions positive! #naughtydog

QUICK TIP #3 Dogs don’t know the rules of play with humans, we have to show them by always playing with a toy (and not biting us) while keeping the rules clear and consistent. #dogplay #puppyplay QUICK TIP #4 Dogs don’t know English.... we have to first show them what we want threw shaping and then tell them (repeatedly & consistently) what it is they are doing... rewarding all the while for good behaviour. #commandoverlay #teachingenglishasasecondlanguage QUICK TIP #5 a treat is something you don’t get often, chicken, cheddar, liver etc.... not the kibbles they could have at dinner time, you can combine kibbles with treats if you are concerned about weight gain or delicate tummies. Much like a child wouldn’t like to do chores without a reward, a dog won’t work for food they could get anytime. If your dog isn’t showing you much attention when training try a high reward treat. #livercake #dogtreats - Liver cake recipe, your dogs will love it! https://www.hearingdogs.org.uk/training-our-puppies/dog-treat-recipes/liver-cake/ QUICK TIP #6 Your lead is an extension of your voice and not your arm. A slack lead makes for a happy walk. #heelwork #walkingtoheel

QUICK TIP #7 A top tip around other animals... practice your ‘leave’ and ‘watch me’ although it’s very cute to think of a puppy playing with a rabbit or sheep, that’s not how other animals see dogs and if they run a dog will chase (we have all seen FENTON run! ) to keep your dog well behaved around animals we need them to ignore them all the time. Ask them to pay you attention and they get treats while practically doing nothing.... who wouldn’t love that #leave #dogsandgoats #fenton
